Mommy Makeover New York City

Choosing a Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover refers to surgical procedures that return your body to its pre-childbirth aesthetic. Pregnancy and childbirth primarily affect the breasts and abdominal areas, however, the goals of your procedure are highly personal. While some mothers are concerned with a single area of their body (such as deflated breasts or a sagging abdomen), many women view their cosmetic makeover as an opportunity to create the body contours they’ve always desired.

The most common procedures are:

Breast Augmentation: Using implants to increase the size, shape or fullness of the breasts.
Breast Lift: Raising the position of the nipple and creating a rounder shape of the breasts to create a new, more youthful contour.

Buttock Lift: Raising and tightening the buttocks to create a smoother, rounder more youthful look.
Labiaplasty: Altering the inner and outer labia for increased comfort and aesthetics.
Liposuction: Removing excess fat from under the skin usually in the abdomen, flanks and back areas, but this can also be done in the thighs, hips, arms, knees, neck or even lower legs.

Tummy tuck: Creating a more contoured abdominal area by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles so that the stomach does not bulge.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

You are a good candidate if you are not planning any future pregnancies, have realistic expectations, and would like a more youthful-looking body contour. You must also be in good health, live in New York City (or be willing to travel), and be motivated to follow Dr. Cangello’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions. For the best results, you should also be close to your ideal weight and your weight should be stable. By “close” to your ideal weight, Dr. Cangello means within 10-15 pounds. If you were to lose more weight than this at any time after your surgery, it may have a negative effect on the aesthetics of your result.

Dr. Cangello will recommend the best way to enhance your body and meet your goals. This may include one procedure or a combination of procedures. A breast lift, for example, will reduce sagging and elevate the nipple position but will not really change the size of your breasts because no volume of tissue is either removed or added to the breasts. It will, however, improve the contour of your breasts, restoring them to a rounder, more youthful shape. If you want your breasts to look fuller particularly in the upper part of the breast, or be larger in overall size, Dr. Cangello may recommend breast augmentation in addition to the breast lift. Some women, whose breasts just appear to be “deflated” but the nipple position has not dropped lower than the fold beneath the breast, may benefit from breast augmentation alone, without a lifting procedure.

If you’re looking for a more toned abdomen, Dr. Cangello may suggest liposuction in addition to a tummy tuck. Dr. Cangello will describe the options available to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Alternatively, there are some women whose abdominal wall tissues don’t get significantly stretched after having children, however, they have some unwanted fat in the belly, or flanks, or lower back, and they would like to achieve a more “hourglass” figure. These women may benefit from liposuction alone and may not actually need a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure. This will all be discussed in consultation with Dr. Cangello once he has examined you and taken a full medical history.

The Consultation: Creating Your Plastic Surgery Plan

Your mommy makeover begins with a consultation with Dr. David Cangello in our New York City office. Dr. Cangello will discuss your medical history and the results that you want to achieve. For your surgery to proceed safely, you need to be honest about your allergies, medications, personal habits, and previous surgical procedures.

Your surgical plan begins by establishing your goals. Dr. Cangello will conduct a physical examination, which includes taking measurements of your body. Dr. Cangello will then describe his surgical plan to achieve the look you desire.

In addition to your goals, Dr. Cangello’s recommendation will depend on your age, anatomy and skin quality. If scarring is a concern. Dr. Cangello will explain his surgical plan and the amount of scarring you can expect. As much as possible, scars will be hidden in the natural folds of your body and not be visible if you are wearing a bikini.

Dr. Cangello and his knowledgeable staff will answer your questions and explain how to prepare for your procedures, as well as what you can expect in your post-operative care.

Preparing For a Mommy Makeover

Dr. Cangello is committed to achieving the best results possible. During your initial consultation, he will create a pre-operative plan for you to follow. This plan is designed for your unique needs, to make sure that you have the best outcome possible. Your pre-op plan may include changes in diet and other habits that impact your health. You will be advised to avoid ANY nicotine-containing products for at least two to four weeks before and after surgery. It is also very important that you avoid any medications (prescribed, over the counter, or alternative) that may cause thinning of the blood for two weeks prior to your planned procedure. The most common medicines that do this are those containing ibuprofen (ie. Advil, Aleve, Mortin, etc.) or aspirin. You should be prepared to share a list of any medicines you are taking with Dr. Cangello and his staff so that you can be advised which ones are safe to continue before surgery and which ones should be stopped.

Dr. Cangello will ask that you see your primary medical doctor (if you don’t have one we can refer you to one) to obtain medical clearance for your surgery. Assuming you are in generally good health, the clearance will include a history and physical performed by the doctor, some routine bloodwork, an electrocardiogram (EKG) and possibly a mammogram if you are having breast surgery.

Despite its innocuous name, a mommy makeover is a major surgery. During the early weeks, you will not be able to care for anyone but yourself. Dr. Cangello will advise you to arrange for household help so that you can focus on healing.

Dr. Cangello and his staff will also give you instructions for the days before your surgery. These may include shaving certain areas of the body, washing with a particular type of soap or starting certain medications that may prevent infection or help with bruising, etc. You will also be told not to eat beginning at midnight on the day of your surgery.

Finally, Dr. Cangello’s staff will explain your post-operative plan. They will give you prescriptions to fill prior to surgery and ask you to find someone to drive you home following surgery.

Where Will the Surgery Be Performed?

Your surgery will be performed at Dr. Cangello’s New York City office. He has a fully accredited (AAASF) state-of-the-art operating room on-site. You are encouraged to ask for a tour of the operating facility when you come in for your consultation.

Types of Anesthesia

Your surgery will be performed using either general anesthesia or local anesthetic with IV sedation. In either case, you will not feel any pain or remember the surgery.

The Recovery Process

You will wake up with a surgical dressing over your incisions. If you had breast surgery, you will be wearing a post-surgical bra or compression garment. If you had an abdominoplasty and/or liposuction, you will have a compression garment around your abdomen. You may have drains attached to collect fluid. You will be given instructions on how to care for these if you do. You may feel achy, swollen or bruised following the surgery. Dr. Cangello will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable. Your drains will likely be removed within a few days of surgery and your sutures will be removed within a week to ten days if they are not dissolvable.

Your length of recovery time will depend on the procedures that were performed. Most patients are able to return to work after one two weeks and to full activity after six weeks.
