What Is Piezo Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty, also referred to as Piezoelectric rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the nose utilizing a device that generates ultrasonic waves to aid in reshaping nasal bones. Dr. Cangello uses the device to send high-frequency ultrasonic waves directly to the nasal bone, allowing him to precisely remove specific bone fragments and dense cartilage without employing traditional nose surgery instruments like chisels and rasps.2

While instruments such as rasps and chisels are effective in reshaping the nasal anatomy, they can also create additional trauma to surrounding tissues and can contribute to swelling, bleeding, and even additional scarring in some cases.

Piezo ultrasonic technology can be used in both open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty under general anesthesia. This type of rhinoplasty surgery provides an advantage because it allows for less adjacent injury to deep soft tissues, adjacent mucosal tissue, and overlying skin, and this translates into less bleeding, minimal bruising, and reduced swelling.3 Patients can expect less pain and a shorter recovery period. Furthermore, reshaping of the structure of the nose is more accurate with ultrasonic rhinoplasty as the cuts that the Piezo device makes are much more precise. This is due to the fact that the cuts are made under direct vision (not the case with chisels as the cuts are made blindly) and result in bones that are not inadvertently fractured or splintered as can happen with chisels.

Benefits of Piezo Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that offers significant advantages as it allows nasal surgeons to cut or remove nasal bone with heightened precision without the use of a chisel or a rasp and offers the following benefits:

  • Negates complications from chisels or rasps
  • Reduces trauma to surrounding soft tissues, blood vessels, and nerves
  • Minimizes bleeding and swelling
  • Is more precise than a chisel or rasp
  • Eliminates accidental splinter fractures
  • Is more gentle than traditional rhinoplasty techniques
  • Supports bone regeneration
  • Offers a faster and more comfortable recovery
  • Reduces postoperative pain
  • Achieves more natural-looking results

Candidates For Piezo Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty Procedure

Candidates for Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty are individuals seeking to improve the size and/or shape of their nose without any alterations to the surrounding skin and tissues. Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty is ideal for all types of nose reshaping, including correcting asymmetry or deviated septum in a septoplasty, improving breathing problems, refining the nasal tip, removing a dorsal hump, smoothing bony irregularities on the nasal bridge, reshaping the nose pyramid, and more.

Piezo Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty Risks & Recovery

Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty is considered very safe when performed by a physician Board-Certified in facial plastic surgery. The postoperative healing process following Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty is more favorable to traditional rhinoplasty; due to the minimally invasive technique associated with the device, the acute recovery period is roughly one week. Dr. Cangello recommends refraining from physical exercise and avoiding strenuous activities or those that risk facial trauma for 6 weeks following Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty. Final results for the new nose are typically visible 6 months after nasal surgery, however, may be earlier with Piezo ultrasonic cosmetic procedures due to reduced swelling.

While rare, all nose surgeries have some risks including bleeding, infection, nasal dryness, and scarring, however, because Piezo ultrasonic rhinoplasty is less invasive than traditional rhinoplasty methods these risks are greatly reduced.
